Symbolism & Imagery:
To understand The Hierophant Tarot card, we should take a look at the imagery and symbolism on the card. In traditional decks, such as the Rider-Waite, The Hierophant is depicted as a religious teacher. Because of the similarity between this card and the High Priestess, the Hierophant is often seen as the masculine version of the High Priestess. He is sat in between two pillars, in a church or other religious setting, and is wearing red robes.
The Hierophant is often depicted with religious symbolism on his clothes and around him. Because of this, he is often seen as the Pope or the Priest. One hand is upright in an act of blessing. The other holds the Papal cross. He is wearing a three-tiered crown that symbolizes his knowledge and authority. Before him, two followers are kneeling. They are also dressed in religious robes and are clearly listening to the wisdom that The Hierophant is teaching. The Hierophant is spreading his knowledge and they respect him for this. He is an inspiring teacher.
